On a warm and extremely humid Thursday afternoon at Valleywood Golf Club in Swanton, Wauseon fired a season low 163 to defeat the host team, Swanton, by five strokes (168) and the Patrick Henry Patriots by 12 strokes (175) in an NWOAL tri-match.
Brady Rupp led the Indians with a three over par 37, just one shot away from sharing medalist honors with Jared Nelson of Patrick Henry who shot a 36.
“The heat didn’t really affect me,” said Rupp, commenting on the playing conditions. “I think the biggest part was the dry fairways. The balls didn’t sit down when the drives were good. Iron shots were kind of hard. The greens sat very well, though. I was pretty happy about today.”
Close behind Rupp was teammate Anna Marshall, the only girl in the competition, who came in with a 40. Marshall, as a point of clarification, is required to hit from the same tees as the boys, giving her no advantage. “Whatever she lacks in length she plays well with her irons and her short game,” explained Wauseon coach Mike Marshall.
The other two Indian golfers to figure in the scoring were Chase Brock with a 42 and Tyler Clausen with a 44. CJ Moser carded a 45 and Trent Armstrong shot a 53 for Wauseon as well.
“I was very pleased with the way our team came over here and played in Swanton in these steamy conditions,” said Mike Marshall. “We knew we had to come out and perform well at these tri (matches) so we’ll have a shot at our league championship.”
The Bulldogs were a close second with a combined total of 168. The four scorers were tightly bunched, led by Mark Lair’s 40. Devin Jones shot a 41, Sam Williams a 43 and Carter Swank a 44. Austin Luce finished just out of the scoring with a 47.
“We knew we would have to play pretty well to get by Wauseon,” said Swanton coach Eric Oakes. “Being on our home course we had a little advantage but we just didn’t capitalize on it. We’re going to have to run the table to have any shot at the end of the year in the (NWOAL) tournament. We’re not out of it. We just have to regroup.”
Wauseon will take on Delta and Montpelier in their next league action on Thursday while Swanton will go up against Bryan and Liberty Center.
