Wauseon girls tennis poised to compete

Wauseon girls tennis’ second year coach Kody Moden likes the makeup of his team heading into the season.

While his first year did not go as well as hoped with the team posting a 5-12 record, he is encouraged by the players returning for the 2017 campaign.

“I think the team as a whole should fare well with the experience they have, but the first part of the season may tend to be a challenge until the team works the bugs out,” Moden explained.

He notes that a strength for his team is an experienced roster. However, a weakness is that some of that experience is not at the varsity level.

Returning for the Indians are Sierra Rupp, Paige Moden, Maddy Wendt, Alizia Kudlica, Julie Waldron, Kate McKean, Madi Rice and Sophia Stockham. BreAnn Garcia is a newcomer to the roster.

The Indians are likely to be in all of their matches this season.

“I believe we should be competitive with the majority of the teams we face with our doubles teams picking up the slack for our singles and vice versa on other occasions,” said coach Moden.

Wauseon will begin the season at Defiance this coming Monday beginning at 4:30 p.m. Their first home match is Tuesday against Bryan.
