Local athletes advance at Division II, Division III regional track meets

Local athletes punched their tickets to state during the opening day of regional track and field action on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the Division II Piqua Regional on Thursday, Wauseon’s 4×800 meter relay team of Aaron Beck, Owen Newlove, Michael Cheezan and Kyle Vernot placed third and advanced to state with a time of 8:18.04.

Also competing for the Indians was Kyle Zirkle in the shot put. He just missed on advancing, placing fifth with a throw of 138 feet, 2 inches.

Jonny Shanks of Swanton placed fifth in the long jump but did not advance. He had a leap of 21 feet, 11 and 1/2 inches, while Mykal Bright of Indian Hill took fourth with a jump of 21 feet, 11 and 3/4 inches.

At the Division III Tiffin Regional Wednesday, Pettisville’s 4×800 team of Elizabeth Sauder, Nichole Foor, Morgan Leppelmeier and Alexa Leppelmeier won with a time of 9:27.78.

Archbold’s boys 4×800 of Jack Fisher, Daniel Nieves, Logan Garrow and Caden Garrow finished fifth at 8:22.05, one spot away from state. Also for the Streaks, Nick Waidelich took 10th in the long jump (19-11.25) and Isaiah Esquibel tied for seventh in the pole vault (12-6).

In the girls high jump at Tiffin, Julia Smith of Swanton placed third and advanced after clearing 5 feet, 4 inches. Archbold’s Macey Rupp took fifth (5-3), Kelsey Fruchey of Fayette came in a three-way tie for ninth (4-10), and Shylo Richardson of Archbold placed 12th (4-8).

Neither Mary Miller of Delta or Sidney Taylor of Swanton could place high enough to qualify in the girls shot put. Miller placed 12th (32-10.25) and Taylor took 15th (32-0.75).
