MANSFIELD – For the third week in a row the Wauseon wrestling team won a championship. On Saturday, they had five individual champions to help them claim the Division II Mansfield District championship, 207.5-132 over runner-up Ashland.

Picking up titles for the Indians were Gavin Ritter at 106 pounds, Hunter Yackee (132), Sandro Ramirez (145), Andrew Bailey (160) and Tony Banister (195).

Also advancing to state were Jarrett Bischoff (120) and Xavier Torres (152) who each earned runner-up placements.

Ritter pinned Randy Hartle of Keystone in his opening match, then bested Ty Spencer of Ontario 16-1 and Jimmy Balazy of Padua Franciscan 4-3 to reach the championship. In the title match he defeated Payton Burgdorf of Firelands 7-3.

Yackee earned pins over Deyer Graffice of Norwalk and Brody Stallings of Cloverleaf, then bested LeConte Merrell of Madison Comprehensive 2-1 in the semifinal. He earned a 4-3 win over Drew Crabtree of Perkins to claim the 132-pound title.

At 145 pounds, Ramirez notched two victories by pin and two more by technical fall to win the championship.

In the title match he defeated Rickey Maffett of Ashland 17-2.

Bailey pinned Collin Kroll of Ontario, defeated Cory Stallings of Cloverleaf 19-2, and pinned Shelby’s Brahm Ginter to reach the 160-pound final. In the final, he edged Noah Clary of Upper Sandusky 12-9.

Banister is headed back to state as he earned pins over Burrow Alexander of Toledo Woodward and Tyler Bath of Vermilion, and defeated Keystone’s David McCullough 1-0 to reach the title match. He defeated Pete Abraham of Padua Franciscan 2-1 in the final.

Other placers for the Indians were Mauricio Barajas who placed sixth at 138 pounds and Alex Sosa who placed fifth at 285 pounds.

The 2017 OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament will be this Thursday through Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of the Ohio State University.
