WHITEHOUSE – Delta fought back from a 13-point third quarter deficit at Anthony Wayne Tuesday, but ran out of time as the Generals held on to take a 50-47 triumph over the 8-4 Panthers.

Maddie Mattimore’s 11 first half points countered eight second quarter points from the Generals’ Abigail Yunker to keep Delta close, 26-22, at intermission.

However, the Generals rang up a 9-0 run in the first 1:40 of the second half thanks to Alix Carter’s triple, consecutive scores off Delta turnovers from Yunker and Hannah Szul, then a fastbreak hoop by Renee Saneholtz to take a 35-22 lead.

But Mattimore led an 11-0 Panther run, scoring seven straight on a pair of free throws, a drive to the rim and a long triple before Abby Freeman knocked down a pair from the foul line and Emily Clifton drove for a score, slashing the General lead to 35-33.

Anthony Wayne extended the two point advantage to 48-40 with 1:40 left in the game when Yunker hit a three-ball from the top of the key and Emily Brandeberry got loose underneath for a score but. The Panthers then mounted one last charge.

Mattimore scored on a steal, then Freeman on a drive, and after Szul missed the first of the bonus from the stripe, Freeman nailed a triple to get the Panthers within a point at 48-47. However, Szul calmly hit all net on both ends of the bonus to clinch the game.

The Panthers shot 14 for 41 from the field to 17 for 43 for Anthony Wayne.

Each team had 17 turnovers.

Mattimore led all scorers with 21 while Freeman added 15. Yunker’s 13 led Anthony Wayne, now 9-2 on the season.

Delta now travels to Wauseon for an NWOAL contest on Friday.
