Delta girls basketball limited Hilltop to just 10 first half points and 18 for the game as they took down the Cadets at home Tuesday night, 61-18.
“Our defense did what they were supposed to do. Hilltop was outnumbered tonight,” said coach Ryan Ripke after the game. “But at the same time, we had to do what we had to do. And I thought we did a pretty good job for the most part.”
The Panthers got two early buckets from Abby Freeman to take a 4-3 lead at the 6:19 mark of the first quarter, then back-to-back threes from Maddie Mattimore bumped that difference to seven points.
Delta had five threes total in the first half.
“That was impressive because on Saturday (against Genoa) I think we were 1 for 13,” said Ripke. “Maddie was 0 for 7 I think on Saturday and she comes out and hits her first two. I asked her if it felt good to hit her first two and she just kind of laughed and said it did. I felt the same way.”
After a putback basket from Delta’s Mary Miller, Mattimore scored on an assist from Freeman but a Kara Brown jump shot for Hilltop made it 14-5 with 2:43 left in the first quarter. The Panthers then got consecutive buckets by Miller, a basket by Emily Clifton, and a steal and score from Freeman.
Hilltop’s Becca Miller split a pair of free throws to close out scoring in the first quarter with the Panthers holding a 22-6 edge.
Delta scored the final eight points of the second quarter to take a 45-10 lead into halftime.
They would score the first 10 points of the third to slam the door on the Cadets. Freeman hit on consecutive attempts, Miller and Darian Elendt each converted baskets in the post, and Mattimore scored on a drive to the hoop to ice it.
Mattimore led the Panthers with 14 points, Freeman added 13 and Miller 12.
Delta (3-2) hosts Wauseon Thursday in a non-league contest.
