Pettisville boys basketball will look to flourish in their first season under head coach Brian Leppelmeier. Their hope is to improve upon last year’s mark of 8-16 overall and 6-4 in the BBC.
The Blackbirds will lean on a pair of returning letter winners who led them in scoring and rebounding, Gabe Beck and Caleb Rychener.
Beck (first team All-BBC, honorable mention District 7) led the team in scoring last season at 11.2 points per game. Rychener (honorable mention All-BBC, District 7) was the team’s leading rebounder with 6.3 per game.
Other returning letter winners for the Birds are Dillon King, Justin Rupp, Landon Roth, Ben Gray and Detric Yoder.
In addition to bringing back their leading scorer and rebounder, Leppelmeier says that overall team attitude and a willingness to work hard are strengths for the Birds.
However, they do lose a pair of All-BBC performers in Stuart Yoder and Evan King. Yoder and King were both honorable mention All-BBC and District 7.
Also gone are Matt Krill and Justin Nofziger.
“Learning a new system of play, (and) learning and accepting new roles on the team,” said Leppelmeier of his team’s weaknesses.
The coach sees two teams as being slightly ahead of the pack in regards to the BBC title race.
“The Buckeye Border Conference will be a tight race with Hilltop and Montpelier returning the core of their varsity teams,” said Leppelmeier.
