Wauseon girls basketball fell behind 17-4 in the opening quarter to Springfield in the season and home opener Friday night. They would go on to lose by a final of 68-27.

The Blue Devils got eight points early from Cierra Harris to help give them an 11-1 advantage with 4:28 left in the first quarter. Brianna Castellano of Wauseon hit the Indians’ first field goal of the night, but a three from Springfield’s Erica Myers kept the difference at 11 points.

The Indians got just 1 of 2 free throws from Karli Penrod throughout the rest of the first quarter, while Rayonna Armstrong and Martaisha Hawkins went a combined 3 of 4 from the charity stripe for Springfield to close out the scoring.

The Blue Devils pushed their advantage to 31-7 in the second quarter before the Indians responded with a nice run. After a pair of missed free throws from Ally Mossing, Penrod split a pair for Wauseon, then Rylee Campbell and Castellano each hit threes for the Indians to cut the Blue Devil lead to 32-14 at the 2:55 mark of the frame.

Wauseon’s Alexis Suarez drilled a pair of free throws to get them even closer, but a pair from the line for Tia Crape and Hawkins lay in with the left hand put them up by 20, 36-16, at halftime.

The Indians were outscored 18-5 in the third period which basically put it out of reach. Scoring for them were Castellano on a bucket inside, Aliza Dauterman who hit a pair of free throws, and Ally Tefft who went 1 for 2 from the line.

However, the Devils got seven points from Myers in the quarter to help them break away. She finished with 16 points for Springfield.

Leading them in scoring was Harris who scored 18. Springfield shot 40 percent (24 of 60) from the floor to just 16 percent (7 of 42) for Wauseon.

Castellano had eight points to lead the Indians.

On Saturday Wauseon had a pair of double digit scorers but could not finish off Tinora as they fell again on their home floor, 50-46. Penrod had 17 points and Castellano 12 for the Indians, while Gina Norden scored 15 for the Rams.

Wauseon (0-2) returns to action Friday when they host Archbold in a non-league contest.
