The Wauseon swim program will continue to take steps forward this year as both the boys and girls teams return a bevy of talent.
“We are set to have big improvements across the board,” said head coach Tony Schuette about both squads.
The girls are probably the most set up for success with many district and state qualifiers back from a team that was district runner-up. They finished with a record of 9-5 last season.
“Nine out of ten district and state qualifiers from last season have returned to the ladies swim program,” said Schuette. “This fact, in addition to the new bodies in the water, set(s) the stage for a competitive season.”
Returning for the Lady Indians are Patience Bachman (state qualifier), Alexis Carteaux (district qualifier), McKenzie Darnell (state qualifier), Sydney Darnell (state qualifier), Audry Lane (district qualifier), Alexis Meyer (state qualifier) and Kaitlyn Precht (district qualifier).
“Although we have several talented girls, we would still like to have a few more athletes to further add depth to the program,” said Schuette.
Newcomers to the squad are Brooke Schuette, Maggie Roelfsema, Megan Carroll, Alyssa Russell, Marin Miller, Kennedy Nation, Keyarra Gorsuch, Hannah Richer, Daisy Giguere, Monica Betz, Alex Grey and Aubrey Starkweather.
The boys team should also be competitive with many athletes returning. Last season they finished 11-3 and took fourth at the district meet.
“A total of 20 gentlemen in the water allows for both diversity among events and adds depth to the program,” said Schuette. “All athletes that made the district and state meets last season are returning.”
Back for the boys team are Lucas Blanchong, Michael Cheezan, Nicholas Dilworth (state qualifier), Lukas Dominique (district qualifier), Zach Fink, Justin Freestone, Seth Hutchison (state qualifier), Christian Laging-Suarez (district qualifier), Camden Sauber, Ryan Scherer (state qualifier), Austin Schuette (state qualifier), Tony Schweinhagen (state qualifier), Kyle Vernot (district qualifier) and Mac Warncke (district qualifier).
The Indians have many newcomers to add depth to the roster.
“We are welcoming the experience of Branden Arredondo (sprint free/IM) and JT Hutchinson (sprint freestyle). In addition to Kyle Zirkle, Trent Sauber, Andon Raker, and Chanller Aguilar who are continually working hard, adding depth to the program,” said Schuette.
Having a full roster has its positives, but there is a downside as well.
“With so many boys on the squad, it will be difficult to find events for everyone to swim (in) at each meet,” said Schuette.
Wauseon opens their season at home against Ayersville Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
