The Delta volleyball team could keep sets close in the early going but ultimately Eastwood pulled away, dispatching of the Panthers in three sets 25-17, 25-14 and 25-14 in a match Monday at Delta.

“Eastwood has a good volleyball program and plays disciplined,” said Panther mentor Kelly Finnen. “They are faster and stronger than us offensively which hurt us at the net. Mary Miller and Madi Nadolny shut down a few hitters on a couple rotations, but not enough for us to capitalize during the game. We struggled in our game throughout the night.”

Delta gave the most fight in the opening set. Down by six points, Darian Elendt scored on a shot down the middle for the Panthers, an Eastwood error and consecutive points at the net for Delta’s Mary Miller cut the Eastwood advantage to 17-15.

Eastwood responded with five straight points that included three from Katelyn Meyer to increase the lead to 22-15. The Panthers got a point from Kinsey Finnen on a shot from the left side and also off an Eagle error, however, Kyra Contris of Eastwood’s kill, Hailey Riter’s ace and a block by Hannah Hodulik gave the set to the Eagles.

Eastwood at one point scored eight of nine points in the middle of the second set as they eased to an 11-point victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Panthers were more stingy at the beginning of game three, battling back from a five-point hole early on. An Eagle serving miscue, Miller’s shot down the middle, Kinsey Finnen’s ace, a tip from Miller and an Eagle error knotted it at 12. Both squads exchanged points to tie the score again before Eastwood fired off nine straight to take command.

Contris started the run with a kill from the left side, then Delta committed back-to-back hitting errors. Contris scored again from the left, there was a Panther miscue, and Hodulik and Contris both added kills. Two more Panther errors made it 22-13 and that was too much for them to overcome.

Kinsey Finnen led Delta with four kills and four digs. Miller added four kills and three blocks, while Madi Nadolny recorded three blocks and four digs.

The Panthers then fell on the road in league action to Patrick Henry on Tuesday, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-22. Kinsey Finnen led the Panther attack with 10 kills, while Emily Clifton added five kills, seven digs and three aces.

Delta (1-3, 0-1 NWOAL) next hosts Swanton Thursday in non-league action.
