Archbold, Wauseon garner high placements at Maumee Bay

OREGON — A pair of Fulton County wrestling teams, Archbold and Wauseon, finished in the top 12 at the 2023 Maumee Bay Classic held Friday and Saturday. Wauseon finished fifth with a score of 145, while Archbold tied for 12th with Kettering Fairmont, each posting a score of 89.

The Indians had three placers in the tournament. Collin Twigg was runner-up at 126 pounds, Larry Moreno third at 120 pounds, and Kale Waxler sixth at 157 pounds.

After a bye, Twigg won by tech fall over both Josh Bonny of Lebanon and Phillip Hash of River Valley, then by major decision against Roman Parobek of Ashland and Marshall Morency of Anderson to reach the first place match.

In the 126-pound final, Twigg was defeated in a 4-3 tie breaker versus Kade Mellon of Wadsworth.

Moreno pinned three of his first four opponents, and also won by a 19-2 tech fall over Bryce Harris of Kettering Fairmont. However, he dropped the semifinal as he was pinned by Milan Edison’s Max Hermes.

Moreno bounced back with a 2-1 win over Candio Deluna of Clay and then pinned Braden Hahlen of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy for a third place finish.

Waxler finished 3-3 en route to getting sixth at 157 pounds.

Archbold had a pair of placers, led by defending state runner-up Brodie Dominique who was victorious at 144 pounds. The Blue Streaks also had Wyat Ripke finish third at 215 pounds.

Dominique won his first four matches by pin. In the semifinal he won 18-5 over Andrew Huck of River Valley. Dominique topped Marcus Medina of Milan Edison 7-1 for the 144-pound title.

After a bye, Ripke bested Brycen Dunlap of Monroeville 10-0 and pinned Kam Ramos of Central Crossing. He dropped to the consolation bracket after a 4-3 loss to Maverick Blackburn of Wadsworth in the quarterfinal.

Ripke responded with four straight wins by decision, including avenging his loss to Blackburn in the third place match, 3-1.
