Wauseon took charge in the third quarter, outscoring Swanton 18-5, in what would end up being a 47-22 victory for the Indians in Northwest Ohio Athletic League girls basketball action at Kevin J. McQuade Gymnasium in Swanton Thursday.

The Bulldogs got within 13, 20-7, at the half on Jessica Finfera’s only 3-pointer of the game with 3:14 before the break as they held the Indians scoreless the final three minutes plus.

However, Swanton’s only points of the third quarter were an Olivia Gowing 3-pointer and a basket inside by Katlyn Floyd.

A big turning point came on a 7-0 stretch by Wauseon’s Aizlynn Coronado in the third. She started it with back-to-back buckets off steals, then she hit a midrange jumper, and capped it with 1 of 2 at the foul line to bump the Wauseon lead to 33-10 at the 1:53 mark of the period.

Hayley Meyer’s three-point play put the difference at 26 points at the 1:33 mark.

Floyd got the Dogs back on the board with her deuce, but Wauseon’s Mackenzie Stasa closed the third with a putback as the Indians led 38-12 after three quarters.

Swanton could not manage to make much of a dent in the fourth.

The Indians started the game on fire as well, leading 15-2 at the first quarter break. Maite Marugan scored seven of her nine points in that opening quarter.

Only 10 points total — five by each team — were scored in the second quarter.

Swanton’s Peighton Manning got them back on the board with a floater 40 seconds into the stanza. Over two minutes later Meyer cashed in on a floater for Wauseon, then a little later on Coronado hit from long range for her only points of the first half, putting the Indians up 20-4.

Then came the aforementioned triple by Finfera.

Wauseon had a trio in double figures led by Meyer with 14 points, plus Stasa and Coronado who each finished with 10.

Floyd and Alaina Pelland each tallied five points for Swanton.
