PERRYSBURG — Wauseon tallied nine placers en route to a runner-up finish at the Perrysburg Invitational Wrestling Tournament held Friday and Saturday. The host Yellow Jackets took the top spot with a team score of 296, while Wauseon was second with a 157.5 score.
Also in the area, Delta placed 19th with a score of 55 and Evergreen was 37th with 19 points.
For the Indians, they were led by Zaidan Kessler who took second at 165 pounds and Collin Twigg who finished third at 126 pounds.
After a bye, Kessler pinned Thomas Tyson of Elmwood, defeated Gabe Garlick of Lakota 13-4, and then in the semifinal he bested Dalton Wolfrum of Tinora 5-2. Perrysburg’s Joey Blaze was too much in the title match, taking down Kessler by a 25-10 technical fall.
Twigg opened by pinning Caleb Kinney of Bellevue and defeated Landon Massie of Liberty Center 16-4, but fell 9-8 against Jared Johnston of Archbishop Moeller in the quarterfinal. He proceeded to win his next four matches, including avenging his earlier loss to Johnston 8-3 in the third place match.
Also for Wauseon Zavian LaFountain placed fourth at 106 pounds, Larry Moreno (120) placed fifth, Benicio Torres (144) and Justin Duncan (215) each placed sixth, Austin Kovar (190) seventh, while Zaden Torres (132) and Manny Gante (150) were eighth.
Delta’s Tyler Barnes placed fourth at 113 pounds.
Barnes pinned Jack Zeiter of Liberty Center, Anthony Velotta of Strongsville, and Hunter Pollock of Clyde in his first three matches.
He dropped to the consolation bracket after a 6-4 sudden victory defeat against Alex Gonzales of Napoleon. Barnes then won by a 4-2 sudden victory against Bodee Miller of Oak Harbor in the consolation semi, but suffered a 4-1 loss to Perrysburg’s Chris Carpenter in the third place match.
Evergreen’s lone placer was Grant Richardson who finished seventh at 165 pounds. Richardson edged Anthony Wayne’s Kyle Wymer 3-2 in the seventh place match.
