Liberty Center took hold of the lead late in the second quarter and never gave it back, resulting in a 51-28 win on the road at Wauseon in Northwest Ohio Athletic League girls basketball Friday night.
The Tigers went ahead for good at 9-7 on Gracie Miller’s 3-pointer at the 2:40 mark of the first quarter. Alyssa Giesige then added a long jumper for a four-point Liberty Center lead heading into the second.
LC would blow it open in the second stanza.
The two teams traded hoops to begin the frame, but the Tigers used their active defense to get hands in the passing lanes and create turnovers, leading to points at the other end.
First Kailey Blanton split a pair at the foul line, then Emerson Gray scored. A Peyton Armey off-balance shot and Blanton’s fast break bucket put them up 20-9. The Tigers added to that margin when Eliza Jones scored the next five points, including a triple, for a 25-9 LC lead with 1:53 to go in the half.
Wauseon’s Hayley Meyer broke the run 13 seconds later with a basket. The Indians, however, trailed 27-12 at halftime.
Wauseon was still behind by 15 (39-24) with around two minutes left in the third, then Ava Coronado connected on a floater to pull them within 13. But that would be a moot point, as the Tigers outscored the Indians 12-2 in the final quarter.
Meyer did lead all scorers with 11 points. Kaylin Ehrsam tacked on eight points for the Indians.
For LC, Giesige and Jones each had 10 points, while Gray and Miller both had nine.
Wauseon (7-6, 0-1 NWOAL) resumes league play this week when they visit Swanton on Thursday.
