Archbold finished the league season the same way they started it…without a blemish in the L column as they beat Evergreen 25-21, 25-13, 15-25 and 25-5 to remain unbeaten in Northwest Ohio Athletic League play and claim an outright league title Tuesday night.

“They do a nice job of working together,” Archbold coach Debbie Culler said. “You could see tonight we had some issues keeping our momentum so it’s nice to walk away being 7-0 and getting it done.”

Archbold rebounded from an early first set 6-3 deficit behind a pair of Keely Culler aces to take a 8-6 lead but Lyla Nash led a Viking comeback with a left-side hammer, a punch over the top and an ace to bring Evergreen within 10-9.

Haley Johnson had two left-side kills around three Archbold attack errors to give the Vikings a 14-10 advantage.

It was then the Vikings’ turn to miss on attacks — three in all — before Olivia Liechty’s ace regained a 17-16 Streak lead.

Three Chaney Brodbeck kills, including an athletic tip to make it 23-19, pushed the Streaks to the verge of a first set win, and after another Johnson kill, Brodbeck scored again for the finish.

Culler had five kills and a second set ace and Archbold took advantage of eight Viking shots or serves going wide or long to blow through the second set.

In the third set, Archbold returned the favor as Evergreen scored their first four points off Streak miscues, followed up by Nash rattling off kills like the shooting gallery in the arcade.

Four times the Viking junior blasted off rounds from the left, then scored consecutive aces to boost the Vikings up 15-7.

Brodbeck and Culler answered with a few rounds of their own, two each and four in all to bring Archbold back to 18-12.

Ellie Johnson stopped the run with an ace and after a couple Archbold mistakes, Nash nailed two more to give the Vikes a third set win.

That’s when Brodbeck took over in the fourth as the senior popped off three aces to help the Streaks go up 7-0.

Five straight Viking misses offensively upped the margin to 15-2 and Archbold’s pair of aircraft carriers in Culler and Brodbeck scored five more times before the end of the set.

“We like to call them finishers,” Culler said smiling. “Our two outsides (Culler and Brodbeck) work super hard to get it done and they did that tonight.”

Aubrey Eicher added an ace and Miley Gericke scored a dunk on an overpass to help the Streaks finish the match.

Winning the league was just one of the goals Culler said her team had this season.

“We have big goals for our tournament run so we need to get back in the gym and get back on track. We need to be a little more technical as a team as a whole and we’ll be working on that this week and next.”
