Eight Wauseon wrestlers headed to state

NORWALK — Wauseon will be sending eight wrestlers to state as they finished runner-up as a team at the Division II district tournament held at Norwalk High School Friday and Saturday.

Buckeye was first with a team score of 211.5, followed by Wauseon with a 192.

The Indians had four make the finals, but each were runner-up in their weight classes. Collin Twigg was second at 113 pounds, Larry Moreno (126), Lawson Grime (138) and Benicio Torres (144).

For Collin Twigg, he pinned his way to the finals against Braylen Williams of Huron, Matt Klimak of Streetsboro, and Mason Ducat of Defiance. He dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to Tyler Hisey of St. Marys Memorial in the final.

Moreno earned two pins and a victory by tech fall to reach the 126-pound final. In that match, he was pinned by Cameron Deiter of Bowling Green.

At 138 pounds Grime, like Moreno, won twice by pin and also added a major decision win to reach the championship match. He dropped a 4-2 decision in overtime against Columbian’s Bret Minnick to finish second.

Benicio Torres won by pin in his first match, but then squeaked by with a 3-2 win over Sam Wegesin of Galion in the quarterfinal and 4-3 ultimate tie breaker against Justin Smythe of Bellevue in the semifinal. Maddux Simcoe of Columbian pinned Torres in 1:11 in the title match.

Zaden Torres, Connor Twigg, Connor Nagel, and Zaiden Kessler also advanced to state for the Indians. Connor Twigg (157) and Kessler (175) were third while Nagel (165) and Zaden Torres (132) placed fourth.

Connor Twigg won by pin in his first two matches before falling to Jon Metzger of Ashland, 5-3, in the semifinal. He rebounded with a major decision to qualify for state then topped Jaden King of Celina 6-1 in the third place match.

Kessler also won his first two matches by pin before losing by default in the semi. His major decision in the consolation semifinal qualified him for state and he pinned Joshua Stanley of Clyde to place third.

Zaden Torres dropped his first match and wrestled all the way back through the consolation bracket to clinch a trip to state. He topped Ayden Reyes of Galion 4-3 in the consolation semi and fell to Landon Engle of Celina 4-2 in the third place match.

Nagel won his first match before falling into the consolation bracket. There, he won three matches, including 9-6 over Hess of Mansfield Senior to advance to state. He fell to Donoovan of St Marys Memorial 3-0 in the third place match.
