ROSSFORD — Archbold and Delta flexed their muscles at the Division III district wrestling tournament held at Rossford on Saturday and Sunday.

Milan Edison was the district champions with a 136 team score, Delta was second at 124.5, Liberty Center third at 100.5, and Archbold and Tinora tied for fourth with a 94.

The Panthers had four total qualifiers and the Blue Streaks two.

“Pretty happy with four,” said first-year head coach Mark Nagel. “Two district champs. You know, feel for the guys that didn’t make it. There’s a few I would really like to have seen make it. That worked hard, just things didn’t go their way this weekend.”

Delta qualifiers for the upcoming state tournament in Columbus were Adam Mattin at 106 pounds, Carson Chiesa (126), Evan Perry (157) and Austin Kohlhofer (285).

Leading the way were Chiesa and Kohlhofer with titles in their respective weight classes. “It all starts in practice. They’re working in practice; they’re doing a great job. They are the leaders of this team as seniors,” Nagel said.

Neither had much trouble en route to titles. Chiesa earned pins in his first three matches, then shut out Antonio Salazar of Gibsonburg 12-0 in the 126-pound final.

Kohlhofer won with four pins, including in 2:41 over Liberty Center’s Owen Box for the heavyweight crown.

Perry was third at 157 pounds. He was victorious in the third place match by way of an injury to Dalton Wolfrum of Tinora.

Perry, another Panther senior, will be making the trip to state for a second straight season.

“We’re really proud of Evan Perry. Qualifying for state again, he’s gonna be a third seed. Very happy for Evan and his success,” Nagel said.

Mattin finished in fourth, dropping a tightly-contested third place match with Abe Hermes of Milan Edison 6-4.

Both freshmen, the duo is likely to become very familiar with one another over the next four years.

“It’s a great match, second time they wrestled this year — second or third. They’ll wrestle again probably next week if I had to guess. Hopefully we can come out on top next weekend,” said Nagel of Mattin and Hermes.

Delta also has a state alternate in Evan Hanefeld who finished fifth at 120 pounds.

At the forefront for Archbold was Brodie Dominique who cruised to the 144-pound title. Dominique opened by pinning Antonio Villarreal of Gibsonburg in 1:16. He won by an 18-3 technical fall over Walker Cisco of Milan Edison, and pinned Cade Petersen of Oak Harbor to reach the final.

He shut out Hunter Vogus of Monroeville 17-0 in the final.

In fact, he was so dominant his coach was sort of at a loss for words to describe his performance.

“Not much to say about Brodie Dominique,” noted Archbold head coach Brian Becher. “He’s just hammering guys on top. His dad’s always a little nervous coming in. So I sent him a text afterwards — you know, like giving him a hard time. Obviously no need to be nervous when he’s wrestling that tough. Anxious to see what he does next week. You never know how the draws are gonna come out. Because (Wayne Trace’s Jarrett) Hornish got beat in the semifinals, so he’s coming out of the three. So (Brodie’s) probably gonna have a tough kid in his second match next week. But you know, the expectation (is) we’re going there to win with him.”

The Streaks’ other placer is Hayden Dickman who finished fourth at 190 pounds. Dickman opened with a pin of Owen DeWeese of McComb, then was dropped to the consolation bracket after a 13-2 loss to eventual champion Logan Lloyd of Milan Edison.

However, he worked his way to the third place match with three straight wins, among those being a 5-1 win over Spencer Franks of Lakota in the consolation quarterfinal and a pin of Arcadia’s Ryland Ernest in the consolation semifinal.

“Dickman was in a bad spot in the bracket, having Logan Lloyd in the quarterfinals, the kid’s super tough,” Becher said. “That really is a 175-pounder moving up, but he’s still, the kid’s a hammer. And then coming back through and getting a big win against the Lakota kid in the consi quarterfinals was big, and then his consi semi wasn’t as big of a win. We knew that other one would be a little bit tougher.”

In the third place match, Dickman fell 2-1 by way of an ultimate tie breaker versus a familiar foe, Owen Johnson of Liberty Center.

“Him and the Johnson kid have wrestled really tight matches three times. Just made a little bit of a mistake there in that third overtime position and didn’t get the win,” said Becher.

Archbold will have alternates in Mason Miller (106) and Wyat Ripke (175).

The OHSAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament is back at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University this Friday through Sunday.
