Despite no league title being up for grabs, both Archbold and Wauseon left it all on the floor Friday in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League and regular season finale for both teams Friday night in boys basketball. After Wauseon’s Tyson Rodriguez tied it up with a well-guarded corner three with seven seconds to go, Archbold’s Alex Roth swished a jumper near the foul line as the final horn sounded for a 48-46 win at home.

Blue Streak mentor Joe Frank said the plan was always to get the ball to Roth for the last shot.

“I said ‘listen, they made an unbelievable shot we can’t do anything about that. Let’s go win it. Let’s get it inbounds to Alex, we’re gonna set a screen at halfcourt. Once he can get around the guard, he’s gonna have a big (defending him). Don’t settle for a three, get all the way into as close to the foul line or the paint as possible.’ Alex had the confidence in himself to go ahead and make that play,” Frank explained.

“It was a classic Archbold-Wauseon (matchup),” added Wauseon Coach Chad Burt. “Neither team could pull away and both teams had a little bit of a lead. Both teams kept grinding, both teams played their tails off. I told our guys, ‘I don’t think we lost it I think Archbold won it at the end.’ I compared it to Brady versus Manning, I said ‘the last team that has the ball is probably gonna win.’ Unfortunately, they had the ball and Roth made a heck of a play. And obviously he’s very capable of doing that.”

While Wauseon led for much of the first half, the Blue Streaks flipped the script in the second half. Gavin Bailey’s layup and two DJ Newman free throws gave Archbold a 25-22 advantage just over a minute into the third quarter. Outside of a Matt Shaw hoop that gave the Indians the lead back briefly, the Streaks led the entire second half.

The Streaks led 44-37 with 1:21 remaining following 1 of 2 free throws by Ashton Kammeyer and his layup. Rodriguez knocked down a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left, then after he corraled a loose ball, he buried another three that brought them within one.

Roth missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 but Archbold was able to grab the rebound, leading to a pair of successful attempts at the foul line by Jayden Seiler and a 46-43 lead.

The Indians worked the clock down to under 10 seconds to go and Burt called timeout. The play they drew up led to Rodriguez getting the ball in the left corner where he sank a triple with a pair of Blue Streak defenders in his face.

“He hit a very tough shot,” Burt said. “Archbold defended it, obviously, very well. When you’re down three with that much time (left), kind of everybody knows that you’re gonna go for a three. So, tip your cap to them that they defended it very well, but Tyson hit an incredibly tough shot to set up that ending.

“He’s cool under pressure. He doesn’t shy away from the moment. And obviously he hit some big shots or us.”

“To be honest with you, we couldn’t have played any better defense. I think his back was to the basket, at least partially to the basket when he shot that. So sometimes you got to tip your cap to the other guy and say, he made a play. Another second or two we may have fouled. But here’s the thing, I don’t think the guy’s even gonna try to shoot it when he’s got his back to the basket. So I don’t think we probably would have fouled there, even though we said if it gets under five we’ll take one,” said Frank.

Carson Burt’s cut to the basket for a score put Wauseon up 10-8 after the first quarter.

Jonas Tester scored six second quarter points for the Indians. However, a Bailey floater brought the Streaks within one, 22-21, at the half.

Seiler paced the Streaks with 13 points while Roth added 11. Rodriguez finished with 13 and Tester 12 for Wauseon (13-9, 4-3 NWOAL).

“I’m just proud of our kids the way they competed,” said Coach Burt. “Heading into tournament, I loved our preparation; I loved how we executed our game plan. Hopefully that sets us up well for a tournament run.”

Wauseon plays Van Wert in a Division II sectional final at Lima Senior this Friday.

Archbold finishes the regular season at 15-7 and 4-3 in the league. They ended the regular season with three straight wins after losing the previous two games.

“Going into tournament, everybody wants to go in on a good note. We played pretty good basketball. We dropped a couple close ones last week, but going to Napoleon (Feb. 12), playing well Tuesday at Holgate (a 57-32 win), and getting this game gets us on a little bit of a mini roll. We were feeling pretty good about ourselves going into that week where we lost at Evergreen and Swanton. It’s not that we played poorly. (We) were a player or two short in both of those games, but again, credit those teams for making plays. But tonight, and even last Saturday night in Napoleon, we had guys step up and make plays like they don’t want the season to end right now.”

Archbold will play the Genoa/Lake winner this Friday at Wauseon in a Division III sectional final.
