Wauseon was able to keep the pace of the game more to their liking in the first 16 minutes, but in the second half Defiance took charge and nearly doubled up the Indians in what ended up being a 47-33 win for the Bulldogs in non-league boys basketball Saturday night.
Wauseon’s Northwest Ohio Athletic League opener slated for Thursday at Bryan was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Golden Bear program. The game is rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 1.
On Saturday, the first quarter was a tight one that saw Defiance hold an 8-7 lead after David Jimenez’ bucket off a steal in the closing seconds.
The visiting Bulldogs extended the difference to three on Joe Lammers’ drive and score 16 seconds into the second stanza. However, Wauseon reclaimed the lead thanks to a Landon Hines hoop in the paint plus 1 of 2 from the foul line by Krue Powers, putting them up 11-10 with 6:33 remaining in the half.
Later in the period, the Indians trailed 15-13 at the 2:18 mark following Bradyn Shaw’s three-point play. They would take a 16-15 lead into the break after a Tyson Rodriguez bucket and Hines’ 1 of 2 free throws.
Wauseon maintained the lead in the first minute of the third quarter as Defiance’s Bradyn Shaw and Matt Shaw of Wauseon exchanged baskets.
But that would be their last lead of the night, with the Dogs proceeding to go on a 11-0 run. The flurry started with a pair of 3-pointers, then Tyler Frederick laid one in, Bradyn Shaw hit a jumper and Frederick went 1 of 2 at the line for a 28-18 advantage with 3:23 to go in the third.
After Rodriguez and Aidan Kiessling alternated baskets, Hines’ three-point play trimmed the deficit to seven, 30-23, at the 1:57 mark. The Bulldogs’ Isaac Schlatter was able to put one in with five seconds left in the third that extended the difference.
To begin the fourth Jonas Tester scored on two straight possessions with a Jimenez deuce in between, making the score 34-27.
However, Defiance’s Cayden Zachrich marked a pair of triples while Jimenez scored another underneath, giving the visitors a 15-point edge and putting it out of reach.
Hines answered Zachrich’s second three with a two-pointer that put the score at 42-29 with under five minutes remaining; however, Wauseon could manage just four points the rest of the way.
Hines scored 10 points and Tester added 8 for Wauseon (7-4). Bradyn Shaw finished with a game-high 12 points, while Schlatter and Zachrich each added 10.
Wauseon hosts Liberty Center (5-4, 1-0 NWOAL) this Friday in league play before heading to Sylvania Northview on Saturday.
