As even their head coach would admit, the 2015-16 Wauseon girls basketball season has been a struggle at times. However, the Lady Indians forged ahead Tuesday night and with a 58-45 win over Rossford, they sent their seniors off on a high note on Senior Night.

“I thought the kids came out and they executed our game plan and did a nice job,” said coach Ashley Oyer. “I thought Rylee Campbell did a great job tonight. She had been struggling and in a little bit of a slump, and she came out and she hit some shots for us.”

The opening quarter was a struggle for Wauseon, as they hit only three field goals and gave up nine points to Rossford’s Haley Gozdowski to trail 11-9 at the quarter break.

But, using an attacking defense and opportunistic offense, they outscored the Bulldogs 15-9 in the second stanza.

Karli Penrod’s free throws knotted the score only 1:10 in, then a three-point play for Brianna Castellano gave the Indians the edge.

Rossford’s Alayna Kitzler answered with a bucket at the other end, Campbell drilled a jumper, and the Bulldogs’ Heather Schaller got a three-point play to knot the score at 16 at the 3:53 mark.

The two squads remained even after Campbell pegged a pair of free throws and Haleigh Peters scored inside for Rossford, however, Castellano’s steal and score put Wauseon ahead with 2:38 left in the first half.

“Once we started scoring, then we could get into our press, and then our press kind of pressured them and we kicked up some turnovers,” said Oyer on the impact of her team’s defense. “So our defense led to some offense for us and that was huge. And we talked about that being an important key to tonight.”

Castellano was a big part of that, as her emphasis on playing the ball led to points at the other end. She also was the Indians third leading scorer, finishing with 11 points.

“She is so athletic, and she is getting way more comfortable (in our system),” said Oyer of Castellano. “She definitely was a huge key in getting some tips and being aggressive and attacking the basket.”

A bucket by Castellano on a drive in from the baseline and two free throws for Penrod made it 24-18 with a little over a minute to go, but a pair at the foul line from Peters put the margin at 24-20 at the half.

Wauseon used a pair of buckets from senior Anna marshall and another from Lexi Sauber to build their lead to nine, 30-21, with only 1:30 gone by in the third. A three-point play by Kitzler reduced their lead to six, but one of two at the line for Marshall and a bucket, plus Castelleno’s putback basket before a deuce by Kitzler bumped the advantage back to nine.

Campbell then showed off her skills with an up and under move on a drive to the hoop to push the Indian lead to 37-26 with 3:12 left. Then Marshall and Kitzler traded hoops. The difference remained nine after three, 41-32, as Rossford’s Hailey Beyer hit two free throws in response to a putback from Castellano in the final 1:37.

The Bulldogs attempted to make a rally in the fourth, pulling within six on multiple occasions.

The first came after Gozdowski’s three-point play at the 5:59 mark, but a pair from the line for Marshall made it 45-37 in favor of Wauseon.

Gozdowski scored inside on the next Bulldog possession, and after Marshall responded with a basket down low, the Indians used a timeout in an attempt to make some defensive adjustments. The obvious adjustment being to pay better attention to Gozdowski who finished with 16 points.

However, the Bulldogs then got a three from Peters to make it 47-42 with 4:57 remaining.

Penrod followed with a turnaround jumper for the Indians and one of two free throws, and Marshall’s jumper which bumped the lead back to 10 essentially iced the game.

Marshall led Wauseon with 20 points, Campbell added 13 and Penrod nine. Kitzler tacked on 14 for Rossford.

Additionally, the Indian defense forced Rossford into 18 turnovers.

Wauseon now closes its regular season with an NWOAL match-up at Bryan Thursday before beginning tournament play next Saturday.

“Bryan is much improved from the beginning of the year. Todd (Grosjean) does a great job with them. He is gonna have his kids ready to go,” explained Oyer.

“And then obviously we have a week to be able to kind of rest and be able to give the kids a couple of days off and come back ready for (the) tournament.”
