Wauseon shot 75 percent in the first quarter and made seven straight free throws to outscore Evergreen 25-9 and coast to a 67-31 NWOAL win to stay within a game of league leading Archbold Friday at home.
6’8” Austin Rotroff got Wauseon off fast with a score off a lob, then a dunk in the first 1:42 before freshman Bryce Hudik answered for the Vikings.
The Indians then went on an 11-0 roll as Rotroff hit a pair of free throws, Luke Rychener scored on a three-point play, Rotroff stuck a putback, Brooks Gype hit a baseline jumper and Mason Creager hit a pair from the line.
Hudik’s triple and fellow freshman Chandler Lumbrezer’s steal and score got the Vikes within 15-7, but that would be the closest Evergreen got the rest of the night.
Two buckets each from Carter Bzovi and Austin Bachman keyed a 10-2 finish to the quarter break and Evergreen never seriously threatened again as the Indians shot 60 percent in the first half compared to Evergreen’s 27 percent.
Rotroff’s 16 led three Indians in double figures with 16. Bzovi added 13, as did Chase Brock for the Tribe.
Wauseon followed up Friday night’s win with a 62-32 rout of Elmwood on Saturday to go to 16-3 on the season. Bzovi scored 16 in that contest, followed by Rychener who pegged 14. Elmwood’s Trevor Solether finished with 13.
The Indians host Bryan Friday and travel to Pettisville Saturday.
Evergreen (7-12) hosts Archbold Friday night.
