It was not easy, but a stingy defensive effort by Delta in the second half helped them overcome an early deficit to defeat state-ranked Archbold, 40-39, handing the Blue Streaks their second loss of the season and second NWOAL blemish.

A free throw for Delta’s Morgan Mattimore with all zeros on the clock got the Panthers the win and let them avoid going to overtime against a highly-regarded Archbold squad.

“Anytime you beat a team of Archbold’s caliber it’s a big win,” said Delta coach Ryan Ripke. “There are still things we need to improve upon. We didn’t shoot free throws very well in the fourth quarter, and I need to do a better job of managing my timeouts. But it was a very good win for us, not because of the state ranking, but because we beat a really good team.”

Archbold’s Kamryn Hostetler hit a three to make their lead 30-24 with 1:15 left in the third period, but then Morgan Mattimore got it going. First, she drove to the hoop for a score with 40 seconds to go in the third. Then, to begin the fourth, her score on a backdoor cut 11 seconds in got them to within two.

Hayley Callahan would convert a basket inside to knot the score at 30, then Jenni Davis split a pair of free throws to put the Panthers ahead, and Morgan Mattimore’s drive and score made it 33-30 with 5:16 remaining.

One of two free throws by Archbold’s Cassi Wyse and four straight points by Hostetler put Archbold ahead by two, but Emily Clifton’s for Delta quickly retied the score. After failing to convert the front-end of a 1-and-1 two straight times, the Panthers reclaimed the lead on one of two at the line from Morgan Mattimore.

A steal and score by Morgan Mattimore with 1:30 left put the Panthers ahead 38-35. Then, another stop for the Panther defense sent Maddie Mattimore to the line where she split a pair, giving her team a four-point edge.

After an Archbold timeout, Andi Peterson recorded a putback basket for the Streaks. Their defense also answered the bell, as a steal led to a bucket by Wyse to knot the score at 39 with 25 seconds left.

The initial chance for the Panthers was stoppped and possession went back to Archbold; however, they were able to get it back and into the hands of Morgan Mattimore, who drew a foul while launching a three as time expired. She nailed the first attempt and there was no need for the other two shots.

“Really, the last 40 seconds were pretty crazy,” noted Ripke. “But in those last few seconds Emily Clifton worked really hard to deflect a pass, which led to us getting the ball back and setting us up for the win. Some probably call it luck, but we created that opportunity with our hard work on defense.

“Our girls have worked really hard at their defense. And we had to pick our spots when we could be aggressive, and I thought our girls did a great job of knowing when to attack on defense and when to lay back a little.”

Archbold jumped on top first in the opening quarter as Alyssa Ziegler outscored the Panthers herself, notching five first quarter points to only four for Delta. With the margin at 7-4 at the 5:26 mark, Ziegler’s putback, plus buckets for Andi Peterson and Emie Peterson, closed out the first with the Streaks on top 13-4.

Delta outscored Archbold by a slight 11-9 margin in the second quarter to put the score at 22-15 at the half.

Pacing the Panthers was Morgan Mattimore with 14 points and Jenni Davis, who had 12. Andi Peterson scored eight for Archbold.

Delta closes out the NWOAL season at Patrick Henry on Thursday before hosting Lake Saturday. Archbold is at Liberty Center Thursday and home against Napoleon on Saturday.
