A 23-5 second quarter run by Wauseon allowed them to surge ahead of Delta for a 73-59 victory at home in NWOAL boys basketball action on Friday.

“I thought early on we passed the ball very well and it set the tone,” said Wauseon coach Chad Burt of his team’s offensive success. “Early in the year they (Delta) were trying to learn that match-up zone and struggled at times with it. But I think as the year’s gone on they’ve figured it out.

“Thankfully for us we made some shots early. We had us shooting 80-plus percent from two in the first half. Again, I think we had very good ball movement, very good people movement against (the zone).”

Delta got nine points on three made triples in the first quarter while Evan Vasquez added five. The period ended with the Indians reclaiming the lead, 18-16, on a three by Luke Rychener at the buzzer.

“I don’t care what Callahan it is, it’s Justin, or Ryan or Marc,” said Burt. “It just seems like the Callahan boys shoot the ball well against us. So it wasn’t completely surprising that Marc came out and banged in those threes.”

They added to that lead in the second period as Carter Bzovi nailed a three 26 seconds in, Vasquez responded with a pair of free throws for the Panthers, but Bzovi and Austin Rotroff of Wauseon converted drives to the basket for a 25-18 lead. This forced a Panther timeout at the 6:45 mark.

Wauseon’s Will Dorsey then scored on a reverse layup, Rotroff scored inside twice, the second on a pass from Dorsey to extend their lead to 13 points and draw another timeout from the Panthers with 3:39 to go.

“In the second quarter we weren’t communicating on the defensive end of the floor,” said Delta interim coach Jeremy Lohman. “On the offensive side we stopped moving the basketball and made it easy for them.”

The Panthers had just one more bucket and one of two free throws by Ron Vargyas in the final three minutes as Wauseon led 41-21 at the break.

“We challenged our big guys to guard (Evan) Vasquez a little bit, which obviously is a bit of a size mismatch,” said Burt of his team’s defensive execution. “But I thought overall our guys did pretty well. Just a solid defensive effort as a whole for us.”

Wauseon led by as many as 25 points in the second half before Delta made a bit of a comeback.

The advantage was 49-24 at the 5:16 mark of the third period when Delta’s Noah Parsons hit two free throws and Rotroff went one of two at the foul line. Parsons buried a triple and got a steal and score to bring the margin under 20.

Bzovi knocked down a three from the corner to put the Indians up by 22. Delta’s Bowen Green answered with a one-handed hoop and a triple of his own, and Rotroff tacked on a pair of free throws to put the score at 55-36 with 1:06 left in the third.

The margin was reduced to 55-40 at the end of the third after a Panther bucket and a pair from the line by Vasquez.

“Our kids did respond well in the second half and attacked Wauseon,” noted Lohman. “I was proud of the way they responded to adversity and battled through it. I believe we learned a lot about our character and the quality of kids we have in the second half. It all starts with the group of seniors we have, they will fight until the end.

“Wauseon is a very good basketball team and other than one quarter of two games, we played them even.”

That never-quit attitude was put on display in the fourth when they got to within 11 points on two different occasions.

The first came when the Panthers opened the final frame with two free throws for Vasquez and a jumper by Parsons. Then, after the Indians pushed the lead back to 61-44, Parsons and Vasquez responded with triples to make it 61-50 with 4:36 left.

Brooks Gype then converted a pass from Rychener for Wauseon following another Indian bucket, but a triple by Vasquez kept the margin at 12. However, Bzovi and Rotroff each notched baskets to make it 69-53 with only 1:25 left to essentially put the game out of reach.

Rotroff and Bzovi paced the Indians with 17 points apiece while Gype had 16. Vasquez and Parsons each added 19 for the Panthers.

Wauseon then picked up a 54-42 victory at Rossford on Saturday to improve to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the NWOAL. Delta dropped to 4-9 and 0-4 in the league.

The Panthers host Hilltop tonight while Wauseon travels to Patrick Henry on Friday.
