WEST UNITY – Like many other games this season, Evergreen made a huge run, this time a 22-1 salvo in the second quarter that eventually led to a 57-21 victory over Hilltop in girls basketball action Monday night.
The victory moved the Vikings to 12-1 on the season.
Evergreen led 12-5 after the first but Eden Eisel sparked the big second quarter with a number of her nine steals on the night that Alyssa Noe and Haili Mossing converted into easy baskets.
Noe scored 11 of her 15 points on the night and Mossing seven of her 16 in the second quarter as Evergreen led 34-6 at the half.
“They really struggled with our press,” explained Viking coach John Langenderfer. “Eden and Alyssa were all over the place and when you have that kind of quickness that can deflect passes and do what they do it’s big. Rachael (Noe) and Hannah Herr are like that as well.
“We’re quick to the loose ball and Haili Mossing and Kaela Fauble deflect a lot of passes inside also, Kaela had five blocked shots tonight so that’s a difference maker defensively too.”
The Vikings scored the first three hoops of the second half before the revolving door from the bench to the scorers table began for Evergreen.
Mossing’s 16 points came on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor, including 3 for 4 from the three-point line, although Evergreen did not shoot the ball well as a whole, going only 21 for 58 from the floor.
“That’s one aspect we need to fix,” said Langenderfer. “We’re still leaving too many points on the floor with missed opportunities on easy shots.”
Felicity Jackson was high scorer for the Cadets (6 for 8) with 11.
Evergreen now travels to Montpelier for an important NWOAL contest with the Locos tonight.
