DEFIANCE – Doubles teams from Wauseon and Archbold have each qualified for the district tennis tournament after finishing first and second at the Division II boys tennis sectional held at Defiance College which concluded over the weekend.
Wauseon’s pair of Tristan Uribes and Sam Frank won the sectional championship. They defeated the duo from Archbold, Erik Short and Clay Gerig, 6-4, 6-0 in the final.
Uribes and Frank also won in straight sets over teams from Toledo Central Catholic, Archbold and Bryan. The Blue Streaks’ Nathan Rettig and Josh Kidder opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win versus a team from Ottawa Hills before falling to Wauseon.
No singles players advanced locally, however, a few did win matches at the sectional.
Archbold’s Devin Witte won two matches but came a win shy of qualifying for the district. He opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Blake Rachwal of Maumee Valley Country Day, then added a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Parish Dragon of Rossford before falling to Ottawa Hills’ James Schwann in the quarterfinal.
Andrew Hogrefe of Archbold opened by defeating Will Drews of Napoleon 6-0, 6-2. He then fell to Niladri Aich of MVCD, ending his tournament run.
Wauseon’s Ben Allen defeated Luke Fackler of Ayersville 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. However, he was eliminated after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Dustin Keil of Maumee.
The district tournament begins Thursday at Keefe Courts on the campus of Bowling Green State University. It concludes on Saturday.
