Wauseon went into enemy territory Tuesday and came away with a three-set sweep of Delta, 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 in Northwest Ohio Athletic League volleyball.
The lead went back-and-forth in game one before the Indians took charge midway through the set. The score was knotted at eight, but Wauseon would score eight of the next nine points.
The Indians got a pair of kills from Lexi Sauber, but an Indian serving error gave one back to the Panthers.
Sauber responded with a shot down the middle, Sydney Zirkle added an ace, then came a Delta hitting error. Maddie Trejo tacked on a kill for Wauseon, and a Skylar Reckner blast from the left extended their lead to 16-9.
The Indians would keep their distance from there, taking the first set win.
The visitors showed how resilient they are in game two. First, the Panthers took a 14-11 lead thanks to a pair of Wauseon hitting mistakes, plus Brooklyn Wymer’s push shot and an ace from Abby Freeman.
The Indians then went on a run of their own.
A pair of Delta errors and a Sauber kill tied it, then Trejo’s push found a hole in the Panther defense. Reckner followed with an ace, Sauber’s strike down the middle, and two Panther miscues made it 19-14 in favor of Wauseon.
They kept that five-point margin later in the game with the score at 23-18. But, the Panthers made one last rally.
Brooklyn Green fired a strike from the left side, Reagan Rouleau scored from the middle, and both Rouleau and Freeman combined for a block to pull them within 23-21, forcing a timeout from the Indians.
Wauseon answered the bell, giving up just one more point the rest of the way. Then, rather anticlimactically, the game ended on a Delta serving error.
The Indians broke a 5-5 tie in the third set and never looked back from there. A Panther error put them in front, Trejo followed with a pair of aces, then Sauber added three straight kills to make it 11-5. The final score would match that of game one.
Sauber was 37 of 43 hitting with 20 kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Tamera Smith was 16 of 19 with six kills.
For Delta, Brooklyn Wymer was 18 of 20 with six kills and six digs.
On Monday, Wauseon defeated Rossford on the road 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10.
Sauber filled up the stat sheet with 32 kills, 34 digs, and six blocks. Zirkle added 13 kills, four blocks, and four aces, while Raabe notched 11 kills and eight blocks.
The Indians (8-2, 3-0 NWOAL) host Holgate Thursday and travel to Defiance on Saturday. Delta (6-4, 1-2) hosts Ayersville this coming Monday.
