While they may not be looked at as one of the top teams in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League, Delta cross country has some quality runners back for the 2018 season.
Notable returnees on the boys side for the Panthers are Walker Sniegowski and Nickolas Sherick. They also have newcomer Shane Kruger.
For the girls, returning are Jenna Hallett (regional qualifier), Cassandra Lee, and Keirsten Culler.
“Positive attitudes for both boys and girls teams in a rebuilding season,” said head coach Lee Mitchell on the strengths of his team.
The Panther boys advanced to the regional meet in Division III last season, and both Sniegowski and Sherick were key members of that squad. However, they do have to replace a runner that qualified for state individually.
Maverick Wright, who was fifth at the district meet and 19th at the regional to punch his ticket to state, graduated for the Panthers. Other departed letter winners are Jarred Marquez on the boys side and Grace Sonick for the girls.
“No depth and low team numbers,” said Mitchell of his team’s main weaknesses. “Boys presently have 5 runners and girls have 4 runners.”
Regardless of their lack of depth, Mitchell thinks he has some runners who can make some noise at the league meet.
“We should have several individual boys and girls that will have a chance to do well at NWOAL league championships and at the district meet,” he said. “Top teams in the NWOAL for both boys and girls should be Liberty Center, Wauseon, Archbold and Bryan.”
He is also encouraged by the direction of the program. “At this point, we have complete teams for Jr. High boys and girls and we will work to keep them in the sport,” said Mitchell.
