The Pettisville boys soccer team has much returning talent off a squad that last year won 14 games.
The Blackbirds were 14-3-2 in 2017 where their season ended in the sectional tournament. They will strive for a better finish this season.
“We are bringing back some experience and adding some youth that will need to contribute towards our success,” said second-year head coach Barnaby Wyse. “I would hope we would win 10 plus games again this season.”
The most notable returnee for the Birds this season is Detric Yoder, who was first team all-district as a junior. He already has over 50 career goals and should eclipse 75 in 2018.
Other returning letter winners are Canidate Vickery, Eli Grieser, Mitchell Avina, Joel Flory, Blake Eyer, Isaac St. John and Brayden Barrett.
“We are returning 7 starters from a team that recorded 14 wins a year ago,” said Wyse on his team’s strengths. “We are also returning our leading goal scorer (Yoder) from a season ago. With a strong incoming freshmen class we will likely play 13-15 players in the everyday rotation.”
Their biggest weakness lies with the production they will have to replace. Gone from last year’s team are Connor Wyse (first team all-district), Dillon King (honorable mention all-district), Landon Roth (honorable mention all-district), Preston Stevens, Garret Young and Justin Rupp.
“We are losing our all-time assist leader that recorded 24 assists last year,” explained the Blackbird coach. “We are also losing a defending midfielder, center back and goalkeeper. We will have 7 freshman and sophomores playing minutes while learning to play against the physicality of the high school game.”
Pettisville travels to Maumee Thursday before returning home to face Archbold Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
