Delta volleyball is hoping for a strong season behind six returning letter winners, two who received all-league honors in 2017, and three of which are seniors.
The Panthers will look to bounce back from last year, where they finished 9-14 overall with a 2-5 mark in Northwest Ohio Athletic League action.
“We expect a winning season and (to) compete for the league title,” said first-year coach Dennis Walton. “Being a young team, many would consider this to be a rebuilding year, but the three sophomores got valuable varsity experience last year as freshmen. The senior leadership is as good as I’ve ever seen and will help pull together and push the younger players.”
Coming back for the Panthers are seniors Raelyn Hutchinson (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Abby Freeman, and Tatiana Ruiz, along with sophomores Brooklyn Wymer (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Brooklyn Green, and Reagan Rouleau.
A promising newcomer for the Panthers is Jersey Irelan.
“Serve/Receive and Cover will be the biggest strength of this year’s team,” explained Walton. “The three senior returning lettermen fill the key positions of Libero, Setter, and DS (defensive specialist). I consider Rae, Abby, and Tat to be some of the best in the league at their positions. The team is young, with four sophomores and a freshman in the starting rotations.”
Delta is at Fayette Monday, Aug. 20 to begin the season.
