NAPOLEON – Wauseon wrestling blanked Van Wert 78-0 at the Divison II Region 9-A Quarterfinal Wednesday at Napoleon.
The Cougars got a bye in the first round when Toledo Central Catholic withdrew from the competition.
“I thought we came out very focused and ready to wrestle,” said Wauseon coach Mike Ritter. “We had a bye the first round, and sometimes that can lead to a little sluggish performance, but that did not happen. Our goal as a team is to get back to the state tournament and state finals. This was the first step toward that, and our kids were not about to overlook anyone.”
Of their 14 victories, nine came by way of pin.
Picking up pins for the Indians were Damon Molina at 106 pounds, Alex Slattman (120), Nolan Ray (126), Jarrett Bischoff (138), Gage Grunden (145), Sandro Ramirez (152), Xavier Torres (170), Trent Davis (182) and Aaron Harris (195).
Additionally, Hunter Yackee earned a 7-5 decision against Gabe Steyer in overtime at 132 pounds, while Wyatt Lane defeated Malachi Battle 7-4 in the 160-pound match. Wauseon also had three wins come via forfeit.
The Indians now advance to the Region 9 semifinal Wednesday at Sandusky Perkins, where they will be looking to punch their ticket to the state dual tournament once again.
Their semifinal match against Napoleon will begin at 5 p.m. The winner of that dual gets either Sandusky or Sandusky Perkins in the regional final.
