Already ahead by a wide margin, Wauseon came out and outscored Delta 24-0 to begin the second half in an 84-26 non-league boys basketball win Friday night.
Everybody got in on the act for the Indians in the third period. Trent Armstrong had a trey in the run, Brooks Gype added a steal and score, Austin Rotroff added four free throws plus a dunk, Owen Newlove added a bucket and Levi Seiler scored off an offensive rebound.
“Our guys were really active tonight,” stated Wauseon coach Chad Burt after the win. “We got some touches that led to steals and that puts a little pep in (our) step. That extends (us) offensively. When you score it puts some pep in your step defensively.”
Bowen Green scored for the Panthers to end the run, but by then it was too late. The score was 62-21 and grew to 70-23 by the end of the stanza.
Even with the reserves playing in the final period, Wauseon outscored Delta 14-3 in the quarter to win 84-26.
Armstrong led the Indians on both ends of the court. He turned a pair of steals into baskets as a part of his 18-point night. Rotroff added 14 and Newlove chipped in 10 points.
“He’s been playing great.” Burt said of Armstrong. “He’s stepped in and is playing at a very high level at both ends. We’re starting to see some of his skills on display.”
Both teams ran the floor well in the early moments of the game. Wauseon got more shots to fall as the Indians took a 25-9 lead after the opening frame and shot 57 percent from the floor to lead 38-19 by halftime.
The Indians had 10 players score in the game.
Green finished with 14 points for the Panthers.
For the game, Wauseon finished 36 of 58 from the floor and outrebounded Delta 40-13. The Panthers ended 11 of 29 shooting. Wauseon also committed seven turnovers to 18 for Delta.
“Anytime you knock shots down everything looks better,” stated Burt. “A lot of times we walk out of games saying we played great or we didn’t play so well and a lot of that is reliant of how we shoot the ball. We shot the ball well tonight and we got some early energy.”
Both teams were also in action Saturday. Wauseon pulled away from Napoleon with a 9-3 run in the third period in a 50-30 decision to stay undefeated. Rotroff led the Indians with 14 points and six rebounds. Newlove added 11 points.
The Panthers were also in action Saturday. They hung around with Otsego in a 60-56 loss. Green continued his hot weekend with 20 points. Brady Wymer added 12 points.
Wauseon (5-0) visits Anthony Wayne Tuesday. Delta (1-4) hosts Evergreen Friday in a non-league contest.
