In the end it was Madison Dzierwa’s second straight three-point bomb with just over a minute left that gave Otsego a 40-39 win over Evergreen.
But in the long run it was the Vikings inability to capitalize on a myriad of second quarter turnovers and committing one of their own with 1.6 seconds left that let the game get away.
Neither team could shoot straight in the first quarter as they combined to go 5 of 29 from the floor with the Vikes holding a 7-4 lead after one stanza.
However, after Emilee Roberts hit a pair of throws to cut that Evergreen lead to a point, the Vikings used a 50 second burst to score an 8-0 run.
Savannah VanOstrand hit the offensive glass for a three-point play, Abi Borojevich canned a triple from the right corner and VanOstrand followed with a steal and score to make it 15-6 with 5:50 left in the half.
But the rest of the half Evergreen played give back as after forcing 12 second quarter turnovers, the Vikings gave it back with eight miscues of their own, including four straight times to end the half, and led 17-10 at the break.
Otsego found the range early in the third and Dzierwa finished an 8-0 run with a triple to give the Knights an 18-17 lead.
Hannah Her’s drive put Evergreen back up, but Brynne Limes answered to give Otsego a 20-19 lead with 5:21 to go in the third.
Herr’s pair of free throws and a coast-to-coast drive gave Evergreen a 24-20 lead that they held at the end of the quarter thanks to VanOstrand’s three-ball off an out of bounds play with 29 seconds left.
Borojevich’ baseline jumper gave Evergreen their biggest lead since the second quarter at 31-25, but just that quick Otsego answered with Holly Roe’s wide open triple that keyed a 6-0 spurt that tied the game.
Bak-to-back triples from Herr and VanOstrand put Evergreen back up six with 2:52 to go but again Roe found herself with no one around her on the left side for a triple and Dzierwa followed with another to tie the game.
Borojevich dropped a dime to Jamie VanLoocke on a back cut to regain an Evergreen lead with 1:19 left, but again Dzierwa answered 17 seconds later, giving the lead back to the Knights.
One Evergreen turnover gave the ball back to Otsego, but the Vikings regained possession after forcing an Otsego miscue with 8.4 left.
However the last of 20 Vikings turnovers, a mishandled pass with 1.6 left, ended the night.
Evergreen did force 24 Otsego mistakes but did minimal damage with those opportunities.
Roe was the Knights only double figure scorer with 14 points. VanOstrand led Evergreen with 13 while Herr added 11.
Evergreen travels to Ayersville to take on the Pilots in non-league play Thursday.
