Swanton roared past Delta Friday night, earning a 56-0 victory and retaining the Iron Kettle. The win improves Swanton’s record to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.
The Bulldogs sit in a tie for second place in the NWOAL with Wauseon and Bryan, while Archbold has clinched the league title.
Swanton still has a chance at a third consecutive playoff appearance, although it will be difficult. They would most likely be in the field with a win at Archbold on Friday.
The Bulldogs started the game with a bang, quickly building what proved to be an insurmountable lead. Gage Pachlhofer returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown and Swanton led 7-0 just 12 seconds into the game.
After a partially blocked Delta punt, Swanton set up shop near midfield. A Pachlhofer run was followed by a 34-yard run to paydirt for Michael Lawniczak. Anthony Howard’s extra point gave Swanton a 14-0 lead.
Delta was forced to punt from their own end zone on the next drive with Pachlhofer returning the punt to the 19-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Dylan Gilsdorf found Howard in the end zone for a score. With the extra point, Swanton led 21-0 with 6:31 still to play in the opening quarter.
On Swanton’s next drive, they were backed up to their own 15-yard line. But three straight plays of over 20 yards set them up inside the Delta five. Lawniczak had a 35-yard run, Hunter Mix a 21-yard run and Gilsdorf found Crew Oberheim for a 25-yard gain.
Zack Leahey did the rest of the work and punched it into the end zone from one yard out four seconds into the second quarter, and the Bulldogs led 28-0.
A pair of Delta fumbles led to two more Swanton scores before halftime. Lawniczak scored on a six-yard run and Gilsdorf hit Zach Rankin on a short pass and Rankin did the rest of the work, stretching for the goal line and the touchdown.
Pachlhofer and Lukas Reiner added touchdown runs in the second half to finish the scoring for the night.
Lawniczak had 92 yards on the ground while Pachlhofer had 80. Travis Dunning rushed for 98 yards to lead Delta (1-8, 0-6 NWOAL).
The win was Swanton’s third straight over their rival. The Bulldogs have assured themselves of their fourth straight winning season.
Next up is a trip to league champion Archbold in the season finale Friday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs currently sit outside the top 8 in the computer rankings, but an upset over the Streaks could propel them into the postseason.
Delta returns home to face Wauseon.
