The Wauseon VFW Auxiliary Unit 7424 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 265 will host their Eighth Annual Blue Star Gold Star presentation Sunday, Oct. 4, 2 p.m. at the VFW hall, 1133 N. Ottokee St.
They are currently looking for families eligible for the Blue Star Banner which is displayed in a window in their homes. The deadline is Sept. 14.
The banners began during World War I, then fell out of favor during the Vietnam War. Fulton County resident Sherryann Franks has made it her personal mission to bring back these banners and urge families with loved ones serving in the armed forces to make their service a source of pride. Franks also hopes that by displaying these banners the communities remain aware of the men and women serving the country every day.
Eligible families have a son, daughter, husband or wife serving in the military. Eligibility is not limited to Fulton County.
The annual Blue Star-Gold Star presentation has been well-attended in past years. This year, the event will feature the American Legion riders, a bagpipe player, soloists, and a dove release.
Military personnel being honored this year are former Perrysburg resident Captain Jonathon Wynkoop and former Paulding resident CO2 Randall Smith. Eleven Gold Star families have been honored the past several years.
