Strong winds Monday ripped off a top branch on a pine tree.


Strong winds that came with a line of severe weather caused damage and power outages in the area Monday.

Numerous reports of wind damage were received by the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, as the main line of storms tracked from west to east. Severe reports were received of downed trees, along with some instances of trees downed onto cars or houses.

Storm reports included a large tree limb blocking a road in Fayette, several tree limbs down on County Road 16-3 between County Road T and County Road TU, a tree limb down on Parkside Drive in Swanton near the elementary school, and a closure of State Route 64 south of Swanton into Tuesday morning.

A 59 mph wind gust was reported at the Toledo Express Airport near Swanton.

In Monroe, Michigan, police reported that a 14-year-old girl died after touching downed electrical wires.

Emergency personnel arrived to discover that the female subject was still in contact with the energized electrical line, according to a statement from the Monroe County Public Safety Department. DTE Energy crews were contacted and disconnected the power lines, so emergency workers could attend to the victim.

Officers on-scene learned that the victim was walking with a friend in the backyard of her residence and believed that they could smell a bonfire. The victim reached for what she believed was a stick, however, it was the charged electrical line.

In Toledo, 13ABC reported that a 54-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her while she was standing in her driveway.

Hundreds were left without power in Fulton County. By Tuesday evening, 59 Toledo Edison customers in Fulton County were still without power. That included 26 in Archbold, 7 in both Swanton and Wauseon, and 6 in German Township.
