The renovation project for the locker rooms and athletic facility at Evergreen High School is nearing completion, and once finished it will produce many benefits for both the school and its students.

According to superintendent Eric Smola, the school is planning to have full occupancy in the completed athletic facility by Aug. 1.

The construction is being performed by Midwest Contracting Inc., with whom the Evergreen Board of Education had approved a contract totaling $2,511,600. The school district funded the project using a multi-year savings plan and $505,000 in federal grants.

“The project consisted of renovating our existing girls’ and boys’ locker rooms and weight room,” said Smola in regards to the details of the project. “We expanded the athletic area by adding an additional 6,444 square feet. The addition included: team locker rooms for both male and female athletes, an office for coaches, male and female locker rooms for officials, a classroom with elevated seating which doubles as a team film room, an expanded weight room, and additional space for sports equipment storage.”

Currently, the male locker rooms and weight room are finished. “Due to supply chain issues, we are still awaiting lockers for the female athletes to arrive and be installed,” Smola said.

In total, once completed, the approximate space of the new facility will be 13,325 square feet.

These changes were a must according to the superintendent. Prior to the expansion, Evergreen teams even had to vacate their own locker room to make space for visiting teams.

“The condition of our locker rooms prior to the renovation and expansion were not consistent with our standards and needed to be upgraded,” explained Smola. “Going forward, none of our teams will be displaced in order to provide locker room space for visiting teams, and we will be able to host tournaments on our campus. The addition of the classroom/film room will not only benefit our health and physical education classes during the school day, but it will serve as a multipurpose room for our athletic teams after school while providing us a space to host community events and meetings as well.”

Starting with the 2022-2023 school year, Evergreen athletes and coaches, along with others, will be able to utilize every part of this high-quality facility.

“I am most impressed with the functionality of the new space and the opportunity for our student-athletes to learn and train in one of the nicest facilities in the area,” said Smola.

He is also just as excited to show off the renovations to members of the community.

“While the COVID pandemic delayed this project for a year, we are excited that it is almost complete and our student-athletes will have the opportunity to directly benefit from the space,” the superintendent said. “We look forward to hosting an open house in August to allow the Evergreen community to tour the facility.”
