Swanton has received an invitation to join the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. Superintendent Chris Lake said the district received the invitation the week of Nov. 8.

“The TAAC extended an invitation. They would really like to see us come in just because we match up really well with them,” said Superintendent Chris Lake. “They feel and I feel based on the fact that we play all these schools in non-league competition in most of our sports, the games are always very competitive, the schools are very close in size and it would just be good for everybody.”

Currently, full members of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC) are Ottawa Hills, Emmanuel Christian, Maumee Valley Country Day School, Toledo Christian, Cardinal Stritch, and Northwood. Among those, Ottawa Hills, Cardinal Stritch and Northwood play 11-man football.

Football only members of the TAAC are Montpelier, Edon and Hilltop.

“(Athletic Director Wade) Haselman and I actually went to meet with the leadership of the TAAC to discuss what that might look like, a possible Swanton membership in the league,” said Lake.

It was mentioned that if Swanton were to join, the league would be able to add wrestling to its athletic offerings.

At the Wednesday school board meeting, Lake mentioned possible benefits of joining the TAAC, such as more opportunities for league titles and a television agreement with BCSN.

Board members asked for a few more details, but no substantial discussions were held on the issue. The item was intended to start a discussion with no vote planned this month.

If Swanton were to leave the Northwest Ohio Athletic League, two school years notice is required. That could be waived if another school, was able to join the NWOAL quickly.

Lake had previously presented to the Board a plan to form a new league with Ottawa Hills, Northwood, Delta, Evergreen, and Montpelier, but that did not come to fruition.
