Goal within reach for 2016 Heart Radiothon

The tallies aren’t quite all in, but 2016 Fulton County Heart Radiothon board treasurer Brent Shea is confident the goal of $24,000 will be either met or surpassed.

As of Wednesday morning, a total of $23,221 had been collected, but the donations aren’t done flowing. The Radiothon will benefit from $5 cholesterol screenings at Fulton County libraries in March and April.

By the end of Feb. 11, after music requests flowed all day for the Radiothon at WMTR-96.1 FM in Archbold, total donations had reached $19,500. On Feb. 18, “Workout For the Heart,” an event hosted by the Fulton County Health Center, added $1,225.

Shea said he’s confident the total sum of Radiothon donations raised will reach or go beyond the goal.

Board member Ron Murd said the total reached at the end of the Radiothon event was $1,000 more than had been collected by that late hour the previous year.

“I’m confident it will go over,” Murd said. “The county’s very giving, and it went really good. It was just steady all day.”

He’s projecting total donations of $25,000.

Shea said the using the Internet has made honoring more obscure music requests by Radiothon listeners easier to obtain.

“From what I heard from the volunteers involved year after year, things went really smooth,” he said.

Using Radiothon donations, the board has already placed an order for 20 automated external defibrillator battery replacements from Cardiac Science Products in Chicago at a cost of $5,500.

Maxell Smith, owner of WMTR, said, as with every year, county residents showed their generosity for a good cause.

“It went great. I thank everyone in the county for continued support of Radiothon,” he said.
