Five Pettisville FFA members and nine chaperones attended the National FFA convention in Louisville, Ky. This year, over 60,000 members and guests attended.

At the sessions held in Freedom Hall, members listened to the national officers’ retiring addresses, watched FFA members from around the country get recognized for their extraordinary achievements, and were inspired by many speakers. They included Rick Rigsby, an ordained minister and former character coach and chaplain for the Texas A&M football team, and Brad Montague, the person behind Kid President.

Members could also visit businesses and colleges at the Career Show.

Jordan Skates, Gretchen Lee, and Hannah Meller participated in the National Agriscience Fair. They receive fourth, fifth, and seventh place, respectively. In order to participate, they had to win first place at the Ohio FFA Agriscience Fair held during the Ohio FFA Convention. They and other candidates submitted their research papers to the National FFA, which reviewed them and selected students to compete at the Agrisicence Fair.

Members who attended convention came back with positive thoughts regarding the experience.

Jacob Dennis said his favorite part was during the Western Region vice president’s retiring address, when told everyone to turn on their cell phone flashlights to light up the arena and demonstrate how everyone can make a difference.

Gretchen Lee said, “I left convention very uplifted and ready to pursue any task ahead of me.”

Hannah Meller said that attending the National FFA Convention as a college student “allowed me the opportunity to see the potential careers there currently are out there.”

And Kayla Wyse said she enjoyed seeing new people and places.

“National Convention allows me to interact with our students in a different setting outside of school, and gives me an opportunity to see our FFA members engage and respond to the experiences of convention,” science teacher Donna Meller said.
