Adult prom to raise scholarship money

Sharon’s Cinderella Ball, a semi-formal adult prom, is planned for December, with proceeds benefiting an area scholarship. All proceeds from the Dec. 5 event will be directed to the Sharon K. Bruce Education Scholarship, which is available to Evergreen and Morenci students.

For many people, prom is one of their fondest high school memories. For Larry and Sharon Bruce, prom night came for many years after graduation. Larry Bruce was a government teacher at Morenci and often chaperoned prom. He and his wife, Sharon, never missed the opportunity to take part in such activities.

So, when Larry began brainstorming ways to raise money to continue the educational scholarships set up in his wife’s name, it wasn’t long before the idea of an adult prom popped into his head.

“Although we had lots of hobbies and many people know how often Sharon sat in the stands of some sporting event somewhere, one thing Sharon loved and enjoyed was music of all kinds. She loved to dance,” said Larry. “We spent a lot of time over the years dancing.”

The prom not only honors that love, but her status of education youths. Sharon is a retired teacher from Evergreen Local Schools and also tutored struggling students, volunteered at Vacation Bible Schools, read to toddlers and gave piano lessons.

Two scholarships, one at Morenci Area Schools and one at Evergreen Local Schools, have been designated in her name for graduating seniors.

The Cinderella Ball will be held Dec. 5 from 7-11 p.m. at Morenci High School. Tickets are $20 per person.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. They are on sale until Nov. 30 at Lyons Beauty Salon, Morenci Public Library, First National Bank in Morenci or by contacting Larry Bruce at 419-260-3639.

Donations can also be made to the Evergreen Local Schools with Sharon Bruce Scholarship written in the memo line.
