Sheriff’s Office warns of scam

Staff Report

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam.

A local citizen received a call from 419-376-5346. Upon calling back, a recording states this is the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department and the caller said there was a warrant for their arrest (Sheriff Lewis) and was instructed to purchase gift cards from a local retailer, then call with the serial numbers on the back of the cards.

Sheriff Roy Miller reminded area residents that the Sheriff’s Office will not call, they will come to your house.

Scammers are using modern technology to display any caller ID they choose, and will say anything to get information from you. Even if you don’t give important information (bank account, Social Security number) any information you do provide they may keep it and sell it to someone else to try and get more information out of you later on.

The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to simply hangup without saying a word, and block the number if you wish but they probably have a ton of phone numbers to choose from.
