Swanton Council approves agreements for funding

Swanton Village Council last Tuesday approved two agreements for funding of local projects. An agreement with the ODNR was approved for the Memorial Park Pavilion project and an agreement with ODOT was approved for Safe Routes to School non-infrastructure funding.

The closed pavilion in Memorial Park is slated to be renovated in 2019. Safe Routes to the School non-infrastructure funding will include educational items. The infrastructure funding for new sidewalks and other items becomes available in 2020.

Also at the meeting, council passed a resolution opposing State Issue 1, which proposes to reduce drug related penalties.

In her report, Village Administrator Rosanna Hoelzle gave an update on area construction projects. She said the Garfield Avenue bridge project has gone smoothly the last few weeks.

It is still scheduled for completion in early December. Paving of Garfield between the bridge and Main Street is still planned, she added, but could be delayed to spring.

Project 7 sewer separation is slated for completion in mid-October. Last Friday, paving was completed on Church Street.

New catch basins have been installed on Clark Street to fix a drainage issue that appeared after a recent project on the site. Testing and surveying is underway for the Project 10 sewer separation project, which is schedule for next year.

Hoelzle also reported that the village applied for Ohio Public Works Commission funding for Project 10 and the business alley behind buildings on the east side of Main Street. The business alley project was given priority points, meaning it has a better chance of funding. The village should know for sure by the end of the year.

Other business

• Council approved an agreement for the Swanton Senior Center to meet at the community center.

• Mayor Ann Roth said she has been researching the railroad quiet zone request that was brought to the village. “I’m hoping that in two weeks, I’ll have a full report,” said Roth.
