With trains, planes, and automobiles of yesteryear, guests of all ages will enjoy the Transportation Exploration event at Sauder Village in Archbold October 6-7.
The event will feature a variety of model trains set up by the Swanton Area Railroad and Model Club. There will also be a garden-scale train display in the Museum building for guests to watch. They can also visit with the train club members and watching the trains travel around the tracks.
A variety of other transportation-themed activities are planned throughout the weekend, including a display of dug-out canoes at Natives and Newcomers and “The Ways We Move,” a special exhibit in the Museum building. Children can enjoy the personal flying area featuring paper airplanes, Styrofoam planes and rockets, and parachute army men. A Thomas the Train wooden railway table will be available for kids to play with at Little Pioneers Homestead, and there will be a train-themed craft and book reading. There will also be drone demonstrations and a straw maze for kids to explore.
For $1 guests can ride the Erie Express train, a replica of the C.P. Huntington with five train cars, one wheelchair accessible. Other discounted rides include the horse and buggy ride and antique car rides in the new 1920s Main Street community.
Guests can also visit the relocated Elmira Depot, a stop on the Erie Express train, in the newly-opened first phase of the “Walk Through Time Experience,” a replicate of a 1920s Main Street.
