LYONS – At the state convention, which were held on Oct. 5 and 6 by the Ohio Homemakers and Community Education, Lyons resident Doris Crowell was awarded, “Homemaker of the Year.” The conference was held at Salt Fork State Park.

Crowell has reached the age of 82 years and is a widow after 41 years of marriage. That marriage produced five grown children, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, which also keeps her busy.

Crowell has been a member of Lyons Live and Learn Club, which is part of the OHCE for 60 years. Crowell has served as club president several times and has served as OHCE – Fulton County Council president. The other clubs in Fulton County are located in Delta and Wauseon. These clubs combine to produce the Women’s Day demonstrations at the Fulton County Fair, held on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at Veteran’s Pavilion.

Crowell is a 60-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and served two years as Worthy Matron.

She has taken leadership roles as president of the Fulton County Senior Citizens – Lyons site council for 25 years, a member of the Lyons Literary Club for 40 years and service director for the Lyons Christian Church. Some of her duties include organizing meals prepared and served after funerals for anyone in the Lyons community.

She is also active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Unit #7574, where she has served as president for 20 years. Even today, she handles publicity for the Friday night fish fry’s at the post and works on the Patriotism projects with junior high and high school students in the area. She also books donor appointments for the Lyons area blood drives.

Among her other interests include serving eight years with the Lyons Historical Society.

Linda Miller, a member of Lyons Live and Learn, said, “Doris is the embodiment of the word ‘volunteer.’

“She does deserve this award for all her time, travel and energy she puts into her volunteer work. The only satisfaction she has sought is doing each job well, every time.”
