DEFIANCE – Behind a runner-up placement from Brandon Miller, the Archbold golf team secured their third straight Northwest Ohio Athletic League championship with a first place finish at the league golf tournament Friday morning at Auglaize Golf Course in Defiance.

The Blue Streaks collectively scored a 306, five ahead of second place Bryan who finished with 311. The two teams came into the tournament tied for first in the league with a 6-1 record in the regular season.

“We had to play really well today,” said Archbold coach Mike Rosebrook. “I knew there was some competition. And it’s never easy in this league. It’s definitely a big, big deal in my book. For the kids as well. They really pulled it off when it counted.”

Wauseon came in at third with a 338 total, Patrick Henry was fourth at 347, and Evergreen behind them with a 363.

“I thought that our performance at the league match was very solid, and we played well as a whole,” said Wauseon coach Kyle Storrer. “We knew that we would have to play our best golf to be in the hunt for first place because Bryan and Archbold are so talented. We posted a good score and walked away feeling good about where we finished in the league race.”

Leading the way for the Streaks was Miller who shot a 75 for second place.

“He has been turning (in) solid rounds for us week after week. Today was no exception,” said Rosebrook of Miller.

Overall, they had four golfers shoot in the 70s as Mitch Grosjean added a 76, Trevor Rupp 77, and Kade Kern 78. It (306) was a number well below the benchmark Rosebrook had for his team when he took over as coach.

“That’s pretty amazing,” said the coach. “I’m happy to shoot 320 (as a team). When I first started coaching, that was my goal. Shoot 320 every week.

“Hopefully we can keep that up.”

Bryan was led by Case Hartman and Peyton Lamberson who tied for third with Grosjean, each with a 76. Their next best was Connor Shirkey who tied for sixth (77) and Andrew Heller who tied for 10th (82).

Earning medalist honors was C.J. Moser of Wauseon who posted a 74.

“After earning the player of the year honors last year, we have continually talked about not getting ahead of himself mentally in a round or getting wrapped up in where he was in the league points,” said Storrer of Moser. “He did a great job focusing on just hitting one good shot at a time, and his score showed that. It is a fitting way for C.J. to end his career, and we are looking forward to the sectional tournament on Thursday.”

Next for the Indians was Trent Armstrong with an 86, Caleb Leu 87, and Eric Parker 91.

Evergreen took fifth as a team, and the Vikings were led by Travis Mersing who shot an 83 to place 12th. Jay Vann of Delta and Carter Swank of Swanton, along with Nolan Kidston of Bryan, tied for 13th after shooting an 83.
