Delta nipped by Maumee Valley Country Day in boys soccer, 2-1

Delta did not get shut out, but they came up just short as they dropped a 2-1 decision at home to Maumee Valley Country Day in boys soccer Tuesday afternoon.

“We played a tough 80 minutes. We just missed a few (shots),” said Panther head coach Charlie Franklin. “But I think the kids gave 100 percent. And I told them the second half, listen, the game’s not over. We still got 40 tough minutes. So we adjusted some things and it seemed to work.”

MVCD gained an early lead when Noah Greenbaum stuck one back in the goal after the initial stop from Delta goalkeeper Tyler McCullough at the 32:51 mark of the first half.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Panthers increased their effort after the break.

Both Anthony Russell and Jared Gilders had shots on goal around the 35-minute mark of half number two, but both were stopped by MVCD keeper Hank Thomas.

Russell nearly pushed one through with 24:21 remaining, however, his attempt was knocked in the air by Thomas and went off the top of the post and was no good. Gilders followed suit with a shot on a pass from Russell less than a minute later, but this time Thomas made a sliding save to thwart the attempt.

The Hawks’ Mujahid Abdel-Ghani booted one off the hands of McCullough and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 with 21:17 remaining.

Delta would respond at the 19:23 mark as Russell, with the help of a pass from Kaleb Circle, fired one past Thomas to cut the Hawk lead in half.

“Him (Russell) and Jared (Gilders) play really well out there. I’m gonna unfortunately miss them next year (when they graduate),” said Franklin of his two offensive standouts. “But you know he (Russell), settles down real good and that’s why he’s a captain. And he tries to settle his team down.”

The Panthers could not manage a tie in the final 19 minutes and were defeated.

They are on the road at Defiance Saturday where they will take on the Bulldogs at 1 p.m.
