Vikings have high hopes for season

By only having to replace two letter winners off last year’s team, Evergreen cross country is hoping to make some noise this season.

“Be competitive,” said coach Andrea Hesson on her hopes for the season. “Our girls team is looking to repeat (a trip) to the regional meet and place in the top half.”

Returning for the Viking girls team are Sarah Schwan (second team All-NWOAL), Trinity Welch (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Katie Fritsch, Ashley Garlick, Angie Tipping and Alexis McCormick. The boys return Ben Schwan (honorable mention all-league), Kyle Smith, Tommy Pollard, Alex Majewski and Chandler Ruetz.

The Vikings will have to replace Phoenix VanOstrand on the boys side and Heidi Fritsch on the girls side.

“Our program continues to grow,” said Hesson, speaking on the strengths of the team. Another plus she says, is that they have runners healthy that suffered injuries in the past.

Newcomers for the boys are Kyle Bowser, Kevin Crisp, Drew Donnald, Chris Hartzell, Nick Hassen, Kyle Peete and Evan Pennington.

Girl newcomers are Hannah Prentiss and Kennedy Keller.

“We are a young program with several new runners,” said Hesson on the weaknesses of her team.

It is the Vikings’ hope that both squads are competitive in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. Hesson’s goal is for the girls to place in the top three of the league, and for the boys to be top five.

Evergreen is in action on Thursday when they are at Delta for a meet beginning at 5 p.m.
