Panthers hoping seniors lead the way

The Delta cross country team has high hopes for the season with some strong senior leaders returning.

“I’m very excited for the potential of both of these teams,” said fifth-year coach Alex Frey. “We have some strong runners at the front and the goal is to find a fourth and fifth runner to step up to complete our scoring squad. If that happens, we could surprise some people.”

Returning for the Delta boys is senior Maverick Wright who placed fourth at the NWOAL meet last year. Other returning letter winners are Hayden Davis and Walker Sniegowski.

They also have newcomers Owen Monroe and Nick Sherick to fill out the remaining roster spots.

“We have great senior leadership and the work ethic has been incredible so far,” said Frey of the boys team. “They all have had a great attitude and are willing to put in the extra work.”

At the forefront for the Panther girls is senior Grace Sonick. She was 13th at the league meet in 2016.

Newcomers for the girls are Jenna Hallett, Keirsten Culler, Megan Allen, Isabella White and Ramzie Hockenberry.

“They also have great leadership at the the top and have been willing to go the extra mile,” explained Frey. “We also have many newcomers on the girls side that showed promise at the junior high level.”

The Delta boys will have to replace departed letter winners Peyton Phillips and Gabe Freeman. Gone from the girls team are Rachel Buchhop and Hayley Callahan.

“The weaknesses for both squads is lack of experience,” said the Panther coach. “We only have three upperclassmen on both the boys and girls teams that have been running. Throughout the season I believe the kids will adjust nicely, but it will take some time.”

Although they are inexperienced, the Panthers have high aspirations when it comes to their league goals.

“Last year the boys were fourth and the girls did not have a team,” said Frey of the NWOAL. “It’s still early and a lot can happen, but our goal for both teams is to finish in the top three.”
