Delta volleyball top Fayette in four

Delta rebounded from a first set defeat to win the next three for a 23-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-23 win at home over Fayette in the volleyball opener Monday.

“I believe the players just needed some time to get settled in. We have a few athletes that are freshmen and some others that are inexperienced with varsity play,” said Delta coach Kelly Finnen on the match.

The first set, like most of them, was very competitive.

Fayette pushed its lead to 19-15 following a kill by Bailee Smith and then a ace from the senior. But, a service error and a hitting error by the Eagles, Madison Nadolny’s shot from the right side for Delta, and serving errors by both teams brought the Panthers within a point.

Brianna Brubaker’s block resulted in another point for the Eagles, but consecutive miscues from the visitors knotted the score at 21. The Panthers would fire a ball out of bounds on the next point to give the Eagles the lead for good.

Delta built an early advantage in the second game and did not look back from there.

Kinsey Finnen’s bullet from left, a tip by Nadolny at the net, and Brooklyn Green’s shot down the middle around errors by both teams gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead. Green and Reagan Rouleau combined for a block on the next point. A Fayette error, an ace by Nadolny, Smith’s block and an Eagle error made it 9-2.

That early lead resulted in a 14 point win for the Panthers to tie the match at one game apiece.

“In set two we had seven service aces that I believe changed the momentum of the game,” noted coach Finnen.

Fayette trailed by as many as nine points in the third set, and although they would pull within 18-17 later on, Delta finished them off by scoring seven of the last nine points.

Despite being down 2-1, the Eagles opened up a lead in the fourth set. With the score tied at six, two Delta errors followed by a pair of kills from Fayette’s Trista Fruchey put them on top 10-6.

Some more work by Smith allowed the Eagles to maintain their lead at 17-13 later in the set. However, they then followed a kill by Smith with a serving error, back-to-back kills from Green, and Mataya Rufenacht’s point on a hit from the back row trimmed the margin to two.

An Eagle error and a pair of aces for Raelyn Hutchinson made it 19-18 in favor of Delta.

It would later be tied at 23 apiece, but it would be the Panthers who came through, using an Eagle error and Finnen’s shot from the left to take the set and the match in four games.

Despite the loss, Fayette coach Brenda Wagner was pleased with her team’s effort.

“I am really proud of the way the girls came out and played tonight,” she said. “We are very young with only one senior and two juniors with any varsity experience, so to come out and win that first set was a great confidence boost for the girls. The upperclassmen really stepped up and they helped the underclassmen to learn as the night went on. I’m looking forward to watching this group grow as the season progresses.”

The Panthers then dropped a match in three sets at Lake Tuesday, while the Eagles were defeated 25-14, 25-14, 25-9 at Pettisville.

Both squads are back in action Thursday as Delta hosts Emmanuel Christian and Fayette welcomes North Central in a BBC contest. Each is a varsity only match.
