Wauseon boys soccer shut out by Rossford

While the scoreboard might not show it, the Wauseon boys soccer team played tough in the losing end of a 3-0 decision to visiting Rossford Friday to start the season.

“We come with some inexperience,” admitted Wauseon coach Shawn Kaufmann. “Most of my group are freshmen and sophomores, except for three kids. I think they are learning the game is a little faster than what they expected, but I think we’ll be okay.”

The Indians played on defense most of the night and couldn’t mount much off an offensive attack against the Bulldogs.

Rossford had lots of chances early, but new Wauseon keeper Easton Delgado turned the shots away. After hitting the post three times, the Bulldogs finally broke through when Ian Teague found the back of the net with 9:40 left in the first half.

“We subbed a freshman to give a couple of minutes to a sophomore,” Kaufmann said on the play that led to the Rossford goal. “And he lost his man for the two minutes he was in.”

Six minutes later, Rossford had another chance but yet again Delgado left his feet to make a save. What he couldn’t do, however, was keep the Bulldogs from taking penalty kicks. Dylan Mikonowicz scored off a penalty kick with 2:46 left in the half to give Rossford a 2-0 halftime lead.

“Easton Delgado has a bright future ahead of him,” the Wauseon coach said of his freshman keeper. “He’s exceptional at the position.”

The bad luck continued for the Indians in the second half. One minute and 14 seconds into the half, Jackson Murtha tallied one final goal on a penalty shot as Rossford took a 3-0 lead, which proved to be the final score in the contest.

The Indians tried to break through late in the contest, but Jakob Pahl was turned away by the Rossford keeper to keep the shutout intact.

Wauseon (0-1) starts NWOAL play Tuesday by hosting Bryan.
